When a load isn't turning off: five owner checks

Think your Energy Sentry system missed a load? Run these five checks first. Most cases turn out to be normal, correct behavior.

Start here, not in the panel

If it looks like a controlled load is ignoring the system, run these checks first. Most of the time the answer is that the system is doing exactly what it should.

Do this

Work through the list below from the front panel.

Do not hold the button for five seconds

Do not open the enclosure, do not touch wiring, and do not hold the button to enter programming mode. Everything on this page can be done by turning the knob and reading the display.

1. Are you actually in an on-peak period?

Turn the knob to DL. If it reads OFF, you are in an off-peak period and the system is not controlling anything. Every load runs freely. This is normal and correct.

Also glance at CL, the clock. If the time is wrong, the on-peak window is wrong too. Do not correct it yourself, call support.

2. Check LS to see what was commanded

Turn to LS, Load Status. The bars show which channels are currently on and which are held off.

If the channel is showing off but the appliance is still running, that is a genuine issue worth a call. If the channel is showing on, the system has not asked for that load to shed, and checks 3 and 4 will usually explain why.

3. Is demand actually above your limit?

Compare AD, average demand, against DL, your demand limit.

If average demand is comfortably below your limit, the system has headroom and will not shed anything. That is correct behavior, not a fault. The system only holds loads back when it predicts you are heading over the ceiling.

If you want more aggressive control, lower the Demand Limit by 0.5 kW and wait an hour. That is the only setting you adjust.

4. Check the AC minimum on and off timers

Air conditioners have protective timers your installer programmed.

  • An AC that just started has a minimum ON time of 8 to 10 minutes, depending on your utility's averaging period. It will not drop the instant demand rises.
  • An AC that just stopped has a minimum OFF time of 5 minutes to protect the compressor from short cycling.

A load that seems slow to respond is very often just serving out a timer. Watch it for 10 minutes before deciding something is wrong.

5. Has an HVAC technician been out recently?

This one catches people. Control wiring getting disconnected during an AC service call is a recurring cause of a system that suddenly stops managing a load.

If a tech has been to the house in the last few months and your peak demand has crept up since, say so when you call. It gives support a fast starting point.
